Renewing Your Permanent Resident (PR) Card in Canada

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for PR card renewal, you must:

  • Hold valid permanent resident status.
  • Reside in Canada physically during the application.
  • Fulfill the PR residency obligation of 730 days within the past 5 years.
  • Not face an active removal order or criminal convictions.

Required Documents

Submit these with Form IMM 5444e:

  • Expiring/expired PR card (or police report for lost/stolen cards).
  • Valid passport or travel document (clear photocopies).
  • Two photos meeting PR card photo specifications (50mm x 70mm, no staples).
  • Proof of residency (e.g., tax filings, employment records).
  • Additional ID (driver’s license, birth certificate for minors).

Exceptions: If abroad, provide evidence of accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or working full-time for a Canadian business.

Application Process

  1. Pay the $50 fee via IRCC’s online portal and attach the receipt.
  2. Mail your completed application to:
    • Regular Mail: Case Processing Centre – PR Card, PO Box 10020, Sydney, NS B1P 7C1
    • Courier: 49 Dorchester Street, Sydney, NS B1P 5Z2

Processing Times & Urgent Requests

  • Standard processing: 45–90 days.
  • Urgent processing reduces timelines but requires proof of emergency (e.g., imminent travel).

After Submission

  • Track your application via IRCC’s portal.
  • Collect your new card in person if requested.
  • Update IRCC immediately if your address changes.

Lost Cards & Non-Receipt

  • Report lost/stolen cards to local authorities and IRCC.
  • If your card isn’t delivered within 6 weeks, contact IRCC for status updates.

Key Compliance Notes

  • PR status does not expire, but cards require renewal every 5 years.
  • Applications missing documents or photos risk rejection.
  • Non-residents must apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document to return to Canada.
